Petter, a leading authority in design and architecture, specialises in using natural and sustainable materials for building construction. As a personal passion, he designs structures from snow and ice that are both functional and captivating. In Greenland, Petter and his team will design and construct our venue in the frozen expanse outside the Icefjord Centre in Ilulissat.
Experience constructing venues from nature’s frozen materials in often hostile, cold, and stormy conditions is invaluable when staging the Ice Music Festival. Petter’s extensive knowledge greatly assists in this endeavour.
Always eager to share his decades of design experience, Petter collaborates with universities and institutions worldwide. Notably, his project with Makerere University in Uganda inspired the concept for 2023’s Ice Music Festival’s Ice Castle in Bergsjøstølen, Norway.

In 2012, the Ice Music Festival, eager to raise awareness about the fragility of water, the world’s most precious resource, invited Kerim to stage a climate change symposium in Geilo, Norway.
As one of the world’s leading climate scientists, Kerim’s interdisciplinary research in Earth Sciences focuses on understanding past climate change dynamics across various timescales, including tectonic, orbital, and millennial, using a combination of climate and ice sheet models, along with marine and terrestrial proxy data.
The symposium was warmly received by the Ice Music audience, leading Kerim and Terje to develop a series of workshops that toured many schools across Norway. This experience strengthened Kerim’s relationship with Ice Music, and since then, Kerim has invited numerous colleagues and associates from the climate science community to present talks and workshops each year.
Kerim co-founded the ILLU Science & Art Hub in Ilulissat, one of the festival’s sponsorship partners.
